The Tian Yue table is the Nobleman

The Tian Yue table is exactly the BaZi Heavenly Nobleman table, read by year stem in Ziwei and day stem in BaZi. A comparison, the two stems, the Fire-line variants and the flank of Life show how to read it.

The short version5 min read

The Tian Yue table has only ten rows, and in BaZi the same table is called Heavenly Nobleman: Ziwei enters it with the birth-year stem and the site's BaZi with the Day Master's stem, and both read out the same pair of branches.

  • The Kui and Yue of the site Ziwei engine equal the Heavenly Nobleman of the site BaZi engine for all ten stems; only the way in differs, the year stem for one and the day stem for the other.
  • On the Fire line the Wikisource copy of juan 2 says "pig and dog", while the engine and the BaZi table use the Rooster; whether Yue is at the Rooster or the Dog also changes the gap between Kui and Yue and which Life palaces can see both.
  • A Kui-Yue flank of Life exists only for the two stem groups whose pair has one cell between; the book's "Life at the Dragon, Kui at the Rabbit, Yue at the Snake" is the Water pattern.
Eighteen seconds: how Ziwei's Kui and Yue share a table with the BaZi Heavenly Nobleman, how the year stem and the day stem differ as ways in, and three checks before reading.

What do Zi Wei's supporting, malefic and minor stars actually do? ↗

One table that BaZi already had a name for

Where Tian Yue (天钺) goes is read off a small table with ten rows, and in BaZi the same table is called the Heavenly Nobleman (天乙贵人).

A five-row, three-column table: each row is one stem group (Yang Wood, Yang Earth and Yang Metal; Yin Wood and Yin Earth; the two Fire stems; Yin Metal; the two Water stems), giving the branch of Tian Yue, the branch of Tian Kui, and the two branches of the BaZi Heavenly Nobleman; the last column is simply the two before it joined, for all ten stems.Open the full-size diagram

Comparison sketch: each row is a stem group and the three columns are Ziwei's Tian Yue, Tian Kui and the BaZi Heavenly Nobleman; the engine comparison was run stem by stem and all ten agree.

Each row of the picture is one stem group. The two left columns give the branches of Tian Yue and Tian Kui in Ziwei, and the right column the Heavenly Nobleman of the site's BaZi: two branches, exactly the Kui-and-Yue pair. We put the Heavenly Nobleman table of the site BaZi engine beside the Kui and Yue of the Ziwei engine and compared them stem by stem; all ten agree.

A Yang Metal year stem gives Kui at the Ox and Yue at the Goat in Ziwei; a Yin Wood day stem gives the Heavenly Nobleman at the Rat and the Monkey in BaZi; one table, a different stem going in.

The last line of the juan 2 verse already calls these two branches the noble direction:

This is the direction of the noble.

juan 2, the closing line of the Kui and Yue verse; translated here

So the word "noble" has a source on the Ziwei side too and was not borrowed later from BaZi. The BaZi side, with its look-up, basis and place in a reading, is in Heavenly Nobleman: how it is looked up; this article keeps to Tian Yue in Ziwei.

The Fire line: pig and dog, or pig and rooster

One character in the same verse deserves a closer look, on the line for the two Fire stems:

Yang Fire and Yin Fire: the pig and dog places.

juan 2, the Kui and Yue verse, Wikisource copy; translated here

The dog is the Dog branch and the rooster the Rooster branch. The Wikisource copy we checked writes "pig and dog"; the site Ziwei engine and the site BaZi Heavenly Nobleman table both use the Rooster, "pig and rooster". We have not checked whether other copies also write "dog", so the source is still to be verified. Under the two readings the Yue of a Fire year differs, and so does the geometry:

Engine reading: in Fire years Yue at the Rooster, one cell between Kui and Yue, Life at the Dog is flanked and Life at the Rabbit or Snake sees both; literal copy: Yue at the Dog, neighbors, no flank and no Life palace sees both.

Whether a program shows Yue at the Rooster or the Dog in a Fire year depends on the version of the verse it follows; change the version and the relation between Kui and Yue changes too.

A flank of Life by Kui and Yue: the example at the Dragon

Juan 3 has an entry on the "Kui and Yue flank Life", with one positional example:

Suppose the Life palace is placed at the Dragon, with Kui at the Rabbit and Yue at the Snake; that is what is meant.

juan 3, the Kui-Yue flank entry; translated here

The Rabbit and the Snake are the Kui and Yue of the Water stems, and the Dragon sits between them. Run through the five stem groups and only those whose pair has one cell between can flank a palace:

Year stem or day stem: two tries

Try A

Day stem Yang Fire, year stem Yin Fire: where are the Heavenly Nobleman and Tian Yue?

Yang Fire and Yin Fire share a row: the Heavenly Nobleman is at the Rooster and the Pig, Tian Yue at the Rooster with Tian Kui at the Pig, so both use one pair of branches.

Try B

Born in a Yin Water year with Life at the Dragon: is Life flanked by Kui and Yue?

Yin Water puts Kui at the Rabbit and Yue at the Snake, and the Dragon lies exactly between them, which is the arrangement of the juan 3 example.

How the two stars see each other, and the geometry of sitting in Life against facing it, is in Tian Kui; the placement basis of the whole group of auxiliary and malefic stars is in auxiliary, malefic and minor stars.

Questions readers ask next

Are my Heavenly Nobleman and my Tian Yue the same branch?

Not necessarily. Both come from one table, but the way in differs: Ziwei uses the birth-year stem and BaZi the Day Master's stem. Only a person whose year stem and day stem are the same gets one pair from both; otherwise each reads its own.

My software puts Tian Yue at the Rooster and another puts it at the Dog. Which is right?

It depends on which version of the verse is used. The Wikisource copy we checked says "pig and dog" for the Fire stems, the Dog; the site engine and the BaZi table say the Rooster. We have not checked other copies, so the source is still to be verified; look up the version note of the software you use.

Is a Kui-Yue flank of Life always a good pattern?

The book lists it as a pattern of its own and gives a positional condition: Kui at the Rabbit, Yue at the Snake, Life at the Dragon. That is only a chart outcome. To see whether a chart has it, first check that the year stem is Yang Water or Yin Water, then that Life is on the Dragon.
