What Are Luck Pillars (Da Yun) in BaZi? Your 10-Year Cycles Explained
Luck Pillars (Da Yun, 大运) are the 10-year cycles that move your BaZi chart through time: your chart is the snapshot, the pillars are the film. How they are calculated from your Month Pillar, when your first cycle starts (and why the start age matters), when your luck changes, how each decade interacts with your Day Master, and the difference between Da Yun and annual fortune.

Luck Pillars, called Da Yun (大运), are the 10-year cycles that move your BaZi chart through time. Your birth chart is a snapshot; the Luck Pillars are the film. Each decade brings a new stem-and-branch pair that interacts with your natal chart, which is why the same person can have a struggling decade and a thriving one.
What is a Luck Pillar (Da Yun)?
A Luck Pillar is one stem-and-branch pair that governs a 10-year stretch of your life. Your natal chart has four pillars fixed at birth; the Luck Pillars are the fifth dimension, a moving pillar that changes every decade and re-weights the whole chart. When a Luck Pillar feeds your favorable element, the decade tends to run smoother; when it strengthens what your chart already has too much of, the same life feels uphill. The classics treat this as the difference between 命 (the chart you were given) and 运 (the seasons you walk through). A strong chart in a bad decade limps; an ordinary chart in a good decade flies. That is why practitioners say 一命二运: the chart first, the cycles right behind it.
How are Luck Pillars calculated?
Your Luck Pillars are derived from your Month Pillar, stepping forward or backward through the sexagenary cycle depending on your gender and the polarity of your Year Stem. Yang-year males and yin-year females count forward; yin-year males and yang-year females count backward. That rule comes straight from the classical method preserved in 《三命通会》 (San Ming Tong Hui). Each step is one pillar, and each pillar rules ten years. You never need to do this by hand: the 10-year luck cycle calculator derives the whole sequence from your birth data, including the exact start age.
When does my first Luck Pillar start?
Your starting age comes from the distance between your birth and the nearest solar term, counted in days and converted to years: three days equals one year. Count to the next solar term if your pillars run forward, to the previous one if they run backward. That is why one person's cycles begin at age 2 and another's at age 9, and why everything in between is governed by the natal chart alone. The calculation is fussy and depends on precise solar-term times, which is exactly the kind of step a rough calculator gets wrong. If your start age is off, every decade after it is mislabeled.
When does my luck cycle change?
Your luck cycle changes every ten years from your personal start age, not on a round birthday or a calendar decade. If your first pillar began at age 6, the changes land at 16, 26, 36, and so on. The handover years (交运) are worth watching: the old decade's theme is fading while the new one settles in, and many people feel those one or two years as unusually unsettled or transitional. Check your own handover ages in the luck calculator so you know whether a rough patch is a decade's character or just the seam between two of them.
Do Luck Pillars decide my fate?
No. A Luck Pillar sets the season, not the script. A favorable decade lowers the friction on what you attempt; a hard decade raises it. Neither replaces your choices, and the tradition itself never claimed otherwise: the point of knowing your cycles is to time your moves, expanding when the season supports you and consolidating when it does not. Read them the way a farmer reads a forecast. You still choose what to plant. This is also where BaZi differs most from casual horoscopes, as we discuss in Is BaZi accurate?: its real subject is timing, not prophecy.
How do Luck Pillars interact with my Day Master?
A Luck Pillar matters only in relation to your Day Master, the element that stands for you in the chart. The same 丙午 fire decade is an output season for a Wood Day Master, a pressure decade for Metal, and a wealth window for Water. There is no universally good pillar; there is only good-for-your-chart. So before reading your cycles, know what your Day Master is, and note how each incoming pillar relates to it: feeding it, draining it, controlling it, or enriching it. Annual pillars (流年) then layer on top of the decade the same way, year by year.
What's the difference between Luck Pillars and annual fortune (流年)?
Luck Pillars are the decade-scale weather; 流年 (annual pillars) are the year-scale weather inside it. The decade sets the background theme, and each year's stem-branch pair plays against both the decade and your natal chart at once. A good year inside a hard decade feels like a break in the clouds; a clashing year inside a good decade is a storm that passes. 2026, the Fire Horse year, is one such annual layer, and how it lands depends on your Day Master and your current decade (see the 2026 Fire Horse forecast).
