Zi — Water at Midnight
Zi opens the twelve branches and closes the day: 23:00 to 01:00, the darkest and coldest stretch. It is Water, holding a single hidden stem — Gui — and at its lowest point the first Yang has already begun to move underneath.

The baseline
Water running out of sight. Zi thinks a lot, remembers precisely, and reads a room fast — most of its conclusions are reached while nobody is talking.
What it does well
Quick to respond, easy to redirect, comfortable alone. Information and people gravitate toward it, which is why Zi tends to be the one who simply knows things.
The work
Sharpest at night, slowest to start in the morning, and inclined to file worries away rather than say them. An outlet matters more than another round of thinking.
What is hidden inside
- Yin Water100%Primary qi · Water
Zi is one of the three pure branches (Zi, Mao, You): a single stem lives inside it, Gui Water, with no secondary or residual qi. Its force points one way and arrives undiluted — what Zi gives is Water, and nothing else.

BaZi months follow solar terms, not the lunar first day. The Zi month runs from Major Snow to Minor Cold (about Dec 7 – Jan 5). The Zi hour crosses midnight and begins at 23:00 — the single most common source of a wrong day pillar.

子 and the other eleven
Zi–Chou combine into Earth. The steadiest pairing of the set: one of them thinks it through, the other carries it.

子 in each of the four pillars
Year branch
Zi in the year branch: early surroundings that move and change; connections with elders are often warm at a distance rather than close at hand.
Month branch
Zi in the month branch (born in the Zi month): Water at full command of the season. The first question for the whole chart is warmth — whether Fire and Earth show up at all.
Day branch — spouse palace
Zi in the day branch: the spouse palace is Gui Water. Partners tend to be perceptive and quietly complicated; the thing that damages this pairing most is keeping everything unsaid.
Hour branch
Zi in the hour branch: the palace of later years and children. Productive late, clearest after dark — sleep is the long-term maintenance item.
The five 子 day pillars
Each stem that can sit on this branch makes a different pillar. Open one for the full profile.
- Yang Wood RatWater feeds Wood: bright, well-supported, the first of the sixty pillars.
- Yang Fire RatSun over water — warm outside, cool underneath, wide emotional swings.
- Yang Earth RatA stream through the hills: steady on the surface, quick beneath, good at holding things.
- Yang Metal RatMetal and water together — clean, sharp, says little and lands it.
- Yang Water RatThe most water-heavy pillar of all: clever, and most in need of banks to run between.
A classical note
Zi means to nourish — it says that all things begin to grow below.
Records of the Grand Historian, Book of Pitch Pipes
In the oldest reading, Zi is not the Rat but zi, 'to nourish': the instant growth starts underground. The zodiac animal was layered on later. What a reading actually works with is that water starting up in the dark.
Frequently asked questions
What does Zi mean in a BaZi chart?
Zi is Water, counted as a Yang branch, holding one hidden stem — Gui Water. It maps to the Rat sign, the hour 23:00–01:00, the month from Major Snow to Minor Cold, and due north.
What time is the Zi hour, and how does it cross midnight?
The Zi hour runs 23:00 to 01:00. A birth after 23:00 belongs to the next day's pillar (schools differ on splitting early and late Zi; this site rolls the day at 23:00). It is the most common reason a hand-drawn chart is off by one day.
Is a Zi–Wu clash always bad?
No. A clash is water and fire meeting head-on: it brings movement and expense, and it can also be the force that finally moves someone off a spot they were stuck on. Whether it helps depends on the whole chart — for a chart short of Fire, Wu arriving is not bad news.
If my zodiac sign is Rat, is my chart a Zi chart?
No. The zodiac animal reads only the year branch, and a chart has four branches. The ones closest to you are the day and month branches — two people born in the same Rat year can be read in completely different directions.
